HISP 326 - INTRODUCCIÓN A LA LINGÜÍSTICA HISPÁNICA

Spring 2021

1. Course Description:

This course is an introduction to basic concepts and methodology used in Spanish Linguistics. The main purpose of this course is to examine the linguistic structure of Spanish based on the principal fields of linguistic inquiry: word order (also known as syntax), word formation (morphology), the sound system (phonetics and phonology), history of the language and variation (sociolinguistics and dialectology), meaning in language (semantics and pragmatics). By the end of the course students will have reviewed grammatical categories, diagramed sentences, analyzed words based on individual morphemes, learned the standard sounds of Spanish and how they vary from English, transcribed phonetically native Spanish, reviewed the historical development of Spanish, and produced an oral and written presentation on variation in Spanish, among others.

We will not be able to cover with equal detail all of the material discussed in the texts and readings; however, it is the responsibility of each student to read each of the assignments identified in the calendario section of the syllabus as well as the homework assignments and quizzes. Questions of clarification should be brought up by the students during class time and/or seek additional help during office hours.

6. CLASS POLICIES:

Engagement: You are expected to be on time and to participate actively in class, either in person or online. Your interaction with other students during class time is the only opportunity that you have to practice Spanish. In order for students to progress in understanding and speaking Spanish, they must hear and speak it on a daily basis. Therefore, students must prepare carefully for class by completing all assignments in advance and arriving ready to participate in class. Every day, students will be graded on individual, pair, and group activities.

Classroom behavior: A respectful conduct and attitude is expected, both toward fellow classmates as well as the instructor. Anyone who fails to act respectfully will be invited to leave the classroom. Any activity that serves to interrupt the teaching or learning atmosphere of the class is prohibited (cell phones, food, talking while others are talking, reading other materials, etc.). Phone use and texting during class is not permitted. *The use of a phone during class will result in a deduction of the final grade by .5%.

Academic Integrity: As a student at IU, you are expected to adhere to the standards detailed in the Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct (Code). Academic misconduct is defined as any activity that tends to undermine the academic integrity of the institution and includes: cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, interference, violation of course rules and facilitating academic dishonesty. When you submit an assignment with your name on it, you are signifying that the work contained therein is yours, unless otherwise cited or referenced. Any ideas or materials taken from another source for either written or oral use must be fully acknowledged. Sharing or receiving information about the content of assignments via apps such as GroupMe constitutes academic misconduct. In addition, posting answers to quizzes/exams or assignments or downloading/copying them from online sources is considered academic misconduct. All suspected violations of the Code will be reported to the Dean of Students (Office of Student Conduct) and handled according to University policies. Sanctions for academic misconduct may include a failing grade on the assignment, reduction in your final course grade, and a failing grade in the course, among other possibilities. If you are unsure about the expectations for completing an assignment or taking a test or exam, be sure to seek clarification from your instructor in advance.

Note Selling: Several commercial services have approached students regarding access to class notes/study guides/exams. Providing instructor’s notes/study guides or uploading course assignments to these sites in exchange for access to materials for other courses is not permitted. Violations of this policy will be reported to the Dean of Students as academic misconduct (violation of course rules). Sanctions for academic misconduct may include a failing grade on the assignment for which the notes/study guides or assignments are being uploaded, a reduction in your final course grade, or a failing grade in the course, among other possibilities. Additionally, you should know that selling a faculty member’s notes/study guides individually or on behalf of one of these services using IU email or via Canvas may also constitute a violation of IU information technology and IU intellectual property policies; additional consequences may result.

Online course materials: The faculty member teaching this course holds the exclusive right to distribute, modify, post, and reproduce course materials, including all written materials, study guides, lectures, assignments, exercises, and exams. Some of the course content may be downloadable for students who may only have intermittent access to the internet, but you should not distribute, post, or alter the faculty member’s intellectual property. While you are permitted to take notes on the online materials and lectures posted for this course for your personal use, you are not permitted to re-post in another forum, distribute, or reproduce content from this course without the express written permission of the faculty member. Online class or discussion sessions should not be recorded individually by students and recordings of class sessions should reposted or distributed in any other forum. Violations of this course rule will be reported to the appropriate university offices and officials, including to the Dean of Students as academic misconduct.

Late work: Late work can be turned in with a 25% reduction for each day late. There will be no make-ups for missed in-class quizzes unless previously arranged with the instructor. These quizzes may occur without forewarning.

Exams: The dates of the exams are fixed unless there is a University sanctioned activity with a previous arrangement with the professor.

Attendance: Attendance will not be a factor in the final grade. However, it may still be taken to comply with accreditation requirements.

Bias-Based Incident Reporting: Bias-based incident reports can be made by students, faculty and staff. Any act of discrimination or harassment based on race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or disability can be reported through any of the options: 1) email biasincident@indiana.edu or incident@indiana.edu; 2) call the Dean of Students Office at (812) 855-8188 or 3) use the IU mobile App (m.iu.edu). Reports can be made anonymously.

Sexual Misconduct and Title IX: As your instructor, one of my responsibilities is to create a positive learning environment for all students. IU policy prohibits sexual misconduct in any form, including sexual harassment, sexual assault, stalking, sexual exploitation, and dating and domestic violence. If you have experienced sexual misconduct, or know someone who has, the University can help. If you are seeking help and would like to speak to someone confidentially, you can make an appointment with the IU Sexual Assault Crisis Services at 812- 855-5711, or contact a Confidential Victim Advocate at 812-856-2469 or cva@indiana.edu.
It is also important that you know that University policy requires me to share certain information brought to my attention about potential sexual misconduct, with the campus Deputy Sexual Misconduct & Title IX Coordinator or the University Sexual Misconduct & Title IX Coordinator. In that event, those individuals will work to ensure that appropriate measures are taken and resources are made available. Protecting student privacy is of utmost concern, and information will only be shared with those that need to know to ensure the University can respond and assist. I encourage you to visit stopsexualviolence.iu.edu to learn more.

Special accommodations: accommodations will be granted to students following the guidelines of the Office of Disability Services for Students, (812) 855-7578, iubdss@indiana.edu. Please contact the ODSS as soon as possible if you need any accommodation.

Diversity and Inclusion Statement: The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is committed to fostering an equitable and inclusive teaching environment in support of students from of all backgrounds and condemns any form of discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, nationality, disabilities, religion, class, political affiliation, and/or additional identities. Our curriculum aims to highlight content reflecting a diversity of socio-political backgrounds, experiences, and points of view. Our in-person and online classes aim to be environments in which each person is seen, heard, and interacted with in a respectful way. Our class is an opportunity to learn from and with each other. It is critical that each class member demonstrates respect for all, especially when views, experiences, and perspectives are not shared. Please let me know directly if something said or done, by either myself or other students or in course materials, is troubling or causes offense, and I will work to make sure our classroom environment reflects the aforementioned values.
